Moon over Manhattan

Perfection.

No other word will do. I stood in the early evening in New York City and looked up at the Empire State Building to see the moon rising above it. It was a perfect sight in so many ways ... In its parallel of humanity against the solar system; in its rhythm of life in the moon's rising; in its reminder of how we reach ever upward to the skies, always pioneers seeking a new frontier; in the simple starkness of beauty.

A perfect moment that spoke clearly to me.

So just a reminder, in this photograph. A reminder to stop, to stay in a moment when you look up, or turn a corner, and find the beautifully unexpected. Capture a part of it in your own self.

Incredible pic!

Can always use the reminder that you post to "stop and smell the roses". Thanks!

Thanks for sharing this beautiful picture! I often find myself stopping, looking up and immersed in gratitude. From there I can see leaves on my maple and oak trees, the blue sky, the drifting clouds and my children and dog playing in the back yard. I hear you!

I'm trying to stop and enjoy what is around me each day I go out exploring with the kids. We are planning a big NYC walk around trip with my boys. I know that they will be in awe of the skyscrapers.

Be careful looking up at the Empire State Building. Remember what happened to Terry McKay? :^)

The moon does have a certain mystique and pull to it. In the morning, just as the sun is beginning to rise, the moon is still out. I usually take a moment to look at it. It's beautiful and somehow seems serene alone in the sky. It makes me smile. The moon and a smile is a good way to start the day.

In New Mexico, the moon rises above the Sandia mountains and when I first moved here, I thought I was in heaven. Having grown up in NYC, it has its own mystique, too. Thanks for sharing the beautiful photo.

I love to gaze at the moon and the stars in the quietness of the night.
Such a beautiful photo and inspiring message. Thanks for sharing.

They say that only tourists look up at the buildings in NYC, but I try to make a habit of doing it at least once a day. Rare to see something as beautiful as this, though.

Mama Zen - Thanks!

Moxymama - So true, we lose alot if we rush things along.

Char - Thanks, a lot of people were drawn to it that night.

This happened to me the other day on a hike. I looked up and in a perfectly clear blue sky was the crescent shape of the moon. Beautiful.

Loved this pic with the Empire State Building and the moon, and you had it right about man and the stars.

Thank you Joanne! So often we can be in such a hurry that we forget to look around at the beauty of unexpected moments!

JGH - The architecture is pretty amazing in the city. Lots of fascinating history in it too.

A perfect moment, and a perfect commentary to go with it.

I know those moments you speak of. I have been there. Aren't they wonderful?

Wow! How cool to see those two icons right next to each other. Great image, a visual poem isn't it?

I love NYC - when I'm there I tend to forget to look at the sky. Well done, you!

Joanne said...

Patty - Yes, they are. This was definitely one of them.

Miriam - I think we can all use the reminder now and then. Glad to oblige!

Reya - The perfect word, icons. That says it all.

What a picture, Joanne! I can imagine the streets around you were pretty busy--but looking up--it's as if only you, the building and the moon exist in that space.

Did you know that the Empire State bldg now has a summer saxophonist playing from 10PM-1AM on the outdoor observatory? Does it get any better than that?

Jan said...

Poignant reminder, Joanne. Don't you think that the moon itself has this effect on us? It seems every time I stop and look up to notice the moon it grounds me -- and also ushers in waves of appreciation for the magnitude and blessings of this life. :-) Your photo is majestic! Thank you for this...

Joanne said...

Linda - That's exactly true, it was just the three of us in that moment.

Mare - Oh, that makes me want to go to nyc before the summer's out, just for that experience. I can't even imagine how beautiful that would be!

Jan - I like that thought, that this celestial vision does have a way of grounding us, of keeping things real, including the majestic. Glad you liked the photo.

Great post, Joanne. Recently, I've been trying to do that. Sometimes we forget the beauty around us by focusing on the ugly.

I found such beauty in Germany and I find it at home.

You're incredibly right! Even though I'm stuck living in Southern Alabama and it's not "home" to me, I'm trying to enjoy it and savor in the moments of playing in the grass with my daughter, the sunsets, the birds chirping and all the quiet things I love about nature. It isn't NYC but I'll get to the big apple one day. It's my #1 travel spot that I'm planning to visit in a few years.

We used to live on the 27th floor of a huge apartment building and had sweeping views of Central Park and part of the skyline. Your photo reminds me of that.

Now we are on the 3rd floor. Not quite the same.

My mother was born and raised in Manhattan.

I used to love it when she would take me there and show me that beautiful city.

There is no other place in the world like it.

Happy Sunday!

Bea - In my thinking, home is one of the most perfect places to find it.

Mandy - I'm sure you'll get there one day, and rest assured, you won't be disappointed. I'm glad you are finding that beauty right where you are, that's what matters.

Joanne said...

Wendy - That 27th floor view sounds gorgeous. How nice to see that every day!

Melissa - So you're a NYer, once removed. Same here, it is a special place.
